Abstract

Swansea University’s School of Mathematics and Computer Science wishes to acquire a collaborative robot known as Franka Research 3 (FR3) robotic system, as a force sensitive robot system that empowers researchers with easy-to-use robot features as well as with low-level access to robot´s control and learning capabilities. The Franka Research 3 robotic system represents the latest in robotic technology, offering high precision, flexibility, and ease of integration. Its advanced capabilities make it an ideal tool for pushing the boundaries of what is possible in robotics research and application. By incorporating the FR3 into their curriculum, the School of Mathematics and Computer Science aims to provide students with practical experience using industry-standard equipment and this hands-on approach is essential for preparing the next generation of engineers and researchers. The procurement of the Research 3.0 robotic system aims to enhance the School’s research, educational, and industrial capabilities, since the purchase will include acquiring the necessary hardware, software, and support services to fully integrate and utilize the FR3 in various applications. The decision to procure the Franka Research 3.0 robotic system is driven by several key factors, including the facilitation of cutting-edge research in robotics, with the development of new control algorithms, AI integration, and advanced manipulation tasks.
