Abstract

Swansea University attracts talented postgraduate research students through its prestigious doctoral training programmes and research excellence scholarships funded by UK Research and Innovation, third sector organisations, charitable funders and, in some cases, the University. These high-profile opportunities not only provide an enhanced experience for University postgraduate research students but also for supervisors who, through their involvement, can become part of a network of supervisors, deliver specialist cohort training and work with non-academic/industry partners to co-develop a doctoral research project. The EPIC Centre for Doctoral Training addresses a clear and challenging need to put people at the heart of research and innovation for data-driven and intelligent technologies. While there will be many, often essential, initiatives to train computational researchers in terms of fundamental data analytics and AI algorithms and processes, our Centre fosters breakthroughs in core aspects of computational science that can enhance the human experience of and engagement with data and intelligence in challenging contexts by exposing and disrupting the science to and by their demands. ‘Launchpad Crucible – Making Strong First Steps in Your Career’ Swansea University has identified a requirement for the provision of specialist trainer to design and deliver a 3-day programme for up to 15 final year PhD students who belong to the EPIC Centre for Doctoral Training at the University. This contract provision is based on an initial 2 years with the option to extend for a further 1 year, since it is dependent on student numbers and continued demand. In supporting this important provision, the successful trainer will support the preparation of final year PhD students as they source and embark on their first career after completing their final studies. In doing this, the trainer will help equip these soon-to-be PhD graduates with those personal skills necessary to make strong first steps in their career outside of the Centre.

Description of the goods or services required

Swansea University attracts talented postgraduate research students through its prestigious doctoral training programmes and research excellence scholarships funded by UK Research and Innovation, third sector organisations, charitable funders and, in some cases, the University.

These high-profile opportunities not only provide an enhanced experience for University postgraduate research students but also for supervisors who, through their involvement, can become part of a network of supervisors, deliver specialist cohort training and work with non-academic/industry partners to co-develop a doctoral research project.
