Abstract

The DSP Centre at Bangor University undertakes research in advanced communication technologies in its state-of-the-art research facility which is partly funded by the North Wales Growth Deal (NWGD) through Ambition North Wales. To further expand our research capabilities, we plan to acquire a 5G Mobile Private Network, and will also require installation/set-up support and training. A 5G MPN is required for indoor operation, covering two physically separated laboratories within the same building, (each approx. 12m x 7m). The MPN should be able to support applications requiring high data rates and low latency. The number of supported user terminals does not need to be excessively large. The support for future system scalability, such as increased coverage area, will be a key consideration. We will also be assessing the 5G use cases the supplier can offer for public demonstration purposes, use cases of interest include health/medical, agri-tech and enviro-tech. The MPN should operate in a spectral band supported by an Ofcom shared access licence.

Additional Information

The University would be keen to speak to appropriate equipment suppliers to discuss requirements prior to going out to formal tender on the 5th August 2024. Interested suppliers are asked to contact Roger Giddings either by email: r.p.giddings@bangor.ac.uk or tel: 01248 382715, in the first instance. The closing date for tender submissions is scheduled to be the end of August/beginning of September 2024, meaning the tender period will run over the summer holiday period.

Prospective suppliers will be required to consider carbon reduction and biodiversity options as part of their tender submissions, along with social value contributions to the project via a Themes, Outcomes and Measures framework. A copy of the proposed TOMs framework is attached.

Potential suppliers are also advised that award of contract is subject to funding being approved. Prices submitted at tender stage will need to remain valid for 120 days.
