Abstract

The contract consists of a feasibility study to determine the appetite for and benefits of the expansion of the Fforest Fawr Geopark into Neath Port Talbot communities which currently border the Geopark. The study will undertake an audit of the natural, cultural and intangible heritage of the proposed expansion area within Neath Port Talbot which will include protected sites e.g. scheduled ancient monuments, Regionally Important Geodiversity Sites (RIGS), SSSI’s, Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC’s) etc, but not limited to these. Working with communities it will identify the stories that are important to them, which explain the relationship of the communities to their landscapes. It is anticipated that these assets (cultural, natural and intangible) can be developed by the communities in partnership with the Geopark and other agencies to provide an attractive, authentic visitor experience to generate local economic benefits and engender pride in those communities leading to social benefits. The study will build on existing relationships and a history of small-scale informal initiatives in the area concerned (see attached map) in which walks, talks and other events have been delivered with some of the local communities. The study should identify the feasibility of a Geopark expansion to operate with other current initiatives in Neath Port Talbot and Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.
