Total quantity or scope of tender

Scope of contract

The purpose of the tender is to achieve a diverse woodland supporting a nature whilst balancing the needs of access and ensure safety. The operations detailed below should be considered with this primary purpose in mind. This piece of work is the first phase of work to restructure the woodland, install new infrastructure and develop a community engagement programme.

1. Woodland management

a. Thinning: to achieve between 20 and 30% reduction in the number of trees as specified in Appendix 1 for each compartment (See appendix 2 for site maps). Felling of trees to focus on removal of ash trees. Other tree species will be removed to meet target reduction and should be selected to ensure as diverse species and age composition as possible and focus on retaining the more open grown shape and those with the greatest range of habitat features (see appendix 3 for examples). It will be acceptable for thinning not to be even in distribution where species diversity is poor and follow up enrichment planting can be undertaken (not included in this tender) to diversify the stand. Final decision on the trees to be removed will be agreed with the project manager (Mark Cleaver) at or shortly before the time of operations.

b. Removing diseased ash trees in clear fell area, groups, single specimens and boundary trees presenting risk to properties: All ash trees in stage 3 or 4 Ash dieback to be removed. Twenty trees across the woodland to be retained as monolith trees for deadwood habitat where the maximum retained hight of the stem is no more than the distance of the tree to the nearest boundary or major paths as shown on the map 2 appendix 2. All retained monolith trees should be ring barked at least 50mm in width and depth. All remaining Ash to prioritized for removal in thinning operations subject to condition.

Estimated number of stems to be felled as part of thinning and felling: Ash = 340, Maple and Hornbeam = 40

Estimated volume of cord wood as part of thinning and felling: Ash = 105m3; Maple and Hornbeam = 60m3

All wood from felling/thinning except that to be used for log piles or dead hedging to be removed from site for the contractor to use or dispose of. Tenders will be marked favourably where they can demonstrate a local market for the wood or chip.

c. Creation of 10 log piles for habitat: To provide ground level dead wood habitat within the woodland area, the contractor is required to leave 10 habitat piles to a maximum size of 3m x 0.8m x 1m (L x H x W) using medium diameter wood (200 - 500mm diameter). Habitat piles to be evenly spaced across the site at least 4m from main paths. Habitat piles should be secured with stakes at each end fixed across the top with plain fencing wire and staples (see appendix 3 for indicative diagram)

d. Dead hedging: minimum size of dead hedging 600mm 900mm (WxH). Dead hedge using brash and poles from felling along lines as indicated on map 2 appendix 1.

e. Creation and restoration of glades and rides: Fell to ground level and stump grind all trees on areas marked for glade creation and all trees less than 300mm dbh within 2m either side of paths marked for ride creation on map 3 appendix 1.

f. Scrub clearance: Scrub (compartment 11 map 1) to be cut to ground level and waste removed to chip or habitat piles to be agreed on site with project manager (Mark Cleaver) at the time of operations .

g. Removal of Eyesore: Within the woodland there is an old trailer chassis (image in Appendix 4) requires removal and disposal. Disposal of waste must conform to All regulatory requirements including waste carrier registration of the transporter (provision of a waste transfer notice to the client and recycling of the materials. Tender submissions should include details of where the waste will be taken for dismantle and recovery of materials.
