Abstract

The work to be carried out by the contracted supplier is genotyping to support genetic analysis to develop a natal baseline to characterise Atlantic Herring populations in the Celtic and Irish seas. The baseline will then be used to identify the origin of individual fish in mixed commercial catch samples, enabling improved stock assessment advice to the various governments involved in quota discussions. The work is part of two linked projects, led by the School of Bioscience at Swansea University, one for the Celtic Sea funded by the European Marine Fisheries Fund (EMFF) through Welsh Government, and one for the Irish Sea funded by the Agriculture Fisheries and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) in Northern Ireland. The tender requires identical analysis for both projects (one covers the Celtic Sea, one the Irish sea). As part of this work Swansea University requires a service for DNA extraction and genotyping of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) individuals with a Genotyping Array. Indicatively the whole project will require processing of between 3000 and 5000 tissue samples, in either two or three runs, which will be provided in 96 well SBS Tube Rack Systems of barcoded tubes or deep well plates, fixed in absolute ethanol (molecular grade).
