Abstract

Radiotherapy supplies. Planning systems. Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, in collaboration with the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, is as a result seeking a radiotherapy treatment planning system that supports a twinned center model of care and which is capable of planning both conformal and IMRT beam radiotherapy treatments.

A treatment planning system is required for the new Radiotherapy facility at the Worcester Royal Hospital which is currently under construction. This new facility will form a twinned centre model with the Radiotherapy facility in the Arden Cancer Centre at the University Hospital in Coventry. Key components of the strategy for the new centre are maximising the delivery of patient activity in Worcestershire for Worcestershire patients, which will at least initially mean some treatment planning for Worcestershire patients being carried out in Coventry and an ability to share scarce staff resources, including Radiotherapy Physics staff (Physicists, Dosimetrists and engineers) and Therapy Radiographers between the two centres.

On opening in January 2015 the Worcester radiotherapy facility will be equipped with 3 Elekta Synergy linacs all of which will have Agility MLCs and two will have IGRT capabilities.

We require a treatment planning system for the Worcester facility that will allow planning of both conformal and IMRT treatments. The Arden Cancer Centre currently is equipped with Prosoma for tumour outlining and conformal plan verification, XiO for conformal treatment planning and Monaco 3 for IMRT planning. There is a recognition that (a) the latest generation of treatment planning systems support both conformal and IMRT treatments; and (b) XiO, whilst currently supported, does not represent a strategic way forward for the twinned centre model.

This is a new requirement for the Trust and WAHT are looking to establish a contract for the provision of a patient treatment planning system that will accommodate the trusts requirements whilst achieving best value pricing.
