Abstract
Healthy peatlands provide a range of important benefits; they store huge amounts of carbon, reduce flood risk, and provide habitat for wildlife and stunning landscapes for people to enjoy. However, many peatlands in the UK are in poor condition, with an estimated 80% of peatlands in Wales in ‘unfavourable condition’. Therefore it is important that they are restored back to a healthy state that enables them to provide for society in the long-term.
RSPB Cymru is looking to appoint a contractor to deliver peatland restoration works in accordance with the requirements outlined in this document. The tenders should fulfil the requirements of the brief outlined in this document.
The Site is part of Migneint–Arenig–Dduallt SAC/SPA and is designated in part for blanket bog habitats. The blanket bog is currently in the process of drying out due to historical land drainage, peat cutting, over grazing and burning of the Site. The aim of the works is to re-wet the bog and increase the existing water levels of the blanket bog so that active peat accumulation can occur. In creating wet areas we will also be providing habitat for breeding curlew, golden plover, a range of specialist invertebrates and plants.
