Description of the goods or services required

The proposal seeks to improve continuation of work of the scheme which commenced development in 19/20 schemes which would see the installation of a bacile bridge adjacent to Gwastad Canal Lock, Crindau. The work will be grant funded by the Welsh Government, via Transport for Wales, as part of their Active Travel funding and has been agreed as a viable scheme for such funding during the current financial year.

Newport City Council have identified an opportunity to improve a bridge crossing across the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal adjacent to Gwasted Lock.

The site is along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal which forms part of the wider non-motorised user network, and more specifically is part of the National Cycle Network.

The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal is designated a Conservation Area by Newport City Council.

The project comprises the installation of an Active Travel compliant manually operated bascule bridge to maintain the passage of boats.

The bridge is to be constructed using steel with concrete abutments. Either side of the bridge, minor works will be undertaken for tie-ins and landscaping works.

The proposal is to construct a new bascule bridge adjacent to the existing Gwasted Bridge (number 26), which will enable ATAG to be achieved. Construction of paved surface approach the proposed brief to tie-in to the existing shared used path.

The intention is that the successful Contractor will- procure, manufacture/fabricate, construct/install the bridge on site during the 2024/25 financial year
