Abstract

Monmounthshire and Brecon Canal- To fully desilt the canal bed between Caerphilly boundary at Harry Roberts Bridge and Pontymason Lane. This will Involve draining down this section and overpumping the water downstream into the section of canal between Pontymason Lane and 14 Locks Visitor Centre. Once dry, the silt which is estimated to be approx. 1000 to 1200 m3 will be taken off site to a location within the Newport Boundary (Shaftesbury Park for stockpiling) within a boarded construction site style compound located at the end of the park outside the former Shaftesbury allotment. This compound will be erected by the contractor winning the tender. On receiving the silt from the canal at the compound the contractor will shape the silt in order to maximise storage and ensure run of water from the material. The sections from Pontymason Lane downstream to 14 Locks Visitor Centre will have excess silt removed around structures (bridges) and pinch points through visual inspection and by consulting the geological surveys which will be made available to you. The material to remove here is estimated to be between 200 to 300 m3. Works will take place under a watching brief carried out by an ecologist. Fish and amphibians from the drained sections will be relocated downstream. Works are anticipated to be completed within 4-5 weeks.
