Description of the goods or services required
Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales: Brand Licensing consultation
Who we are
Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales is a family of seven national museums and one collections centre located across Wales. But we’re more than our buildings. Our sites are vital community spaces that reach far beyond their location on a map. We have over 5 million objects in our collections, including social and industrial history, the natural sciences, Art and Archaeology. Our collections range from Roman artefacts and Impressionist paintings to dinosaurs and beautiful Welsh textiles. One of our sites was a working coalmine, another a working woollen mill, and another was a slate quarry. We have an outdoor site full of re-erected historic buildings from all over Wales, including a pub where you can buy locally brewed ales. One of our Museums is in the centre of an old Roman fortress with an amphitheatre on its doorstep, and we also have a museum in the heart of Cardiff city centre.

Our Brand licensing aims
Amgueddfa Cymru is starting on a journey to explore its brand potential. We are looking to work with a brand licensing agency to help us in the very early stages of this process.
We have funding available to facilitate this work until the 31st March 2025, with an initial budget of £12k. Due to this tight timescale, we would like to make a start on developing our strategy as soon as possible. Initially you would work with key staff from the brand licensing collections workstream and the newly appointed brand licensing officer.

Total quantity or scope of tender
We are looking for guidance in the following areas
- How to review our collections to develop an overview of where our strengths lie.
- How to turn our core values into a unique brand identity that is distinctive from others in the cultural heritage sector.
- How to develop ideas for potential markets and clients.
- How to begin the process of aligning our brand to current trends and looking forward to future trends that we can tap into.
Outcomes
At the end of the consultation period, we would like a developed strategy that includes an action plan and next steps for both the short term and longer term. This strategy will be used to inform and underpin a business case to secure future funding.
We would also like to be in a position to move forward with a discrete pilot project to develop these ideas into something tangible.
The strategy would need to:
- build on Amgueddfa Cymru’s existing mission statement and core values to create a distinctive voice that we can articulate to an external audience.
- recommend options for developing a brand licensing programme based on resources in staffing and estimates of the costs required, both internal and external.
- provide recommendations regarding marketing, trademark, legal considerations and initial target audiences for a pilot project.
If you have any further questions, please contact Sally Carter (Principal Documentation Officer) at: sally.carter@museumwales.ac.uk
