Valleys Cycle Network Monitoring - Route User Intercept Surveys

II.1.6)

Description/object of the contract

The Valleys Cycle Network is the construction of an extra 100 miles, and 250 miles of enhancement of the National Cycle Network in South Wales. The Valleys Cycle Network project is funded by the Convergence European Regional Development Fund. See http://www.sustrans.org.uk/sustrans-near-you/wales/valleys-cycle-network for more information.

Sustrans' Route User Intercept Survey Programme has been running since 1998. We currently have a vast database of around 40,000 responses from survey participants intercepted on the National Cycle Network.

One Route User Intercept Survey is comprised of:

• Four days of surveying –1 weekday school holiday, 1 weekday term time, 1 weekend day school holiday and 1 weekend day term time – at a precise, given location from 7am-7pm

• Approximately 28 questions over 3 sides of A4 paper

• One interviewer

• One other person conducting a manual count of route users

Sustrans Wales require that 18 Route User Intercept Surveys be conducted along 15 sites on the Network.

The survey sites will be located within the South Wales Valleys Cycle Network with one site located outside the area in Powys.

The work will be completed in two phases:

• Spring – 8 surveys to be completed during a 6 week period between March and April with 1 weekend holiday date to be completed over the Easter bank holiday weekend

• Summer – 10 surveys to be completed during a 6 week period between August and September

The survey data will be provided to Sustrans in the form of an electronic spreadsheet, compatible with SPSS/PASW, within 8 weeks of data capture.
