Abstract

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (MTW) is a large acute hospital Trust in the south east of England. The Trust was legally established on 14.2.2000 and provides a full range of general hospital services, and some areas of specialist complex care to around 560 000 people living in the south of West Kent and the north of East Sussex.

The Trust’s core catchment areas are Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells and their surrounding boroughs, and it operates from two main clinical sites: Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury. The latter is a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) hospital and provides wholly single bedded en-suite accommodation for in-patients.

The Trust employs a team of over 5 000 full and part-time staff. In addition, the Trust provides specialist cancer services to around 1.8 million people across Kent, Hastings and Rother, via the Kent Oncology Centre, which is sited at Maidstone Hospital, and at Kent and Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury. The Trust also provides outpatient clinics across a wide range of locations in Kent and East Sussex.

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (MTW) Information Technology

The Trust has two IT Teams, who cover Systems, Networks, Telephony and the Desktop estates. One team explicitly covers Oncology technology for our Oncology users across the county and the other team is the main IT support for the rest of the organisation.

Collectively, the two IT teams support over 4 000 Microsoft Windows 7 based devices, which includes PCs, Laptops and Tablets. The fleet of devices is of mixed age and there is a need to refresh a large percent of the estate in readiness for a migration to Windows 10.

As an alternative to purchasing new devices on traditional capital model and keeping a mixed-aged fleet, the Trust is exploring the option of outsourcing the supply and maintenance of an entirely new fleet of devices as part of a Managed Desktop Solution. Details of our requirements can be found in Section 2 of this document.

With regards to Windows 10, the Trust have signed up to the license agreement with NHS Digital for Windows 10 Enterprise E5.

Preferred contract model

3+1+1

Asset tagging and CMDB

The Trust requires all devices to be asset tagged with unique identifiable data. The contract holder must compile and maintain a CMDB database of all assets, which will be provided to the trust upon request.

Break-fix peripheral stock

On average, the Trust is replacing 300 keyboards and 300 mice as BAU break-fix replacements. Obviously, existing peripherals are of varying age and we would anticipate this number to reduce with the introduction of a new estate. We would prefer if break-fix keyboards and mice were included in the cost of the contract.On-site “hot-swap” devices.

In the event that a device doesn’t function correctly, the Trust will require a small stock of hot-swap devices to be held on-site at both Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital. Our preference is for five of each device type, however, we are open to suggestions from the provider of the service.
