Abstract

Description: Kent County Council is looking to invite organisations to inform the recommission of the Habilitation service. Habilitation involves one-to-one training for children and young people with a vision impairment. Starting from their existing skills, it aims to develop their personal mobility, navigation and independent living skills. At whatever age the training is started, the overriding goal is to maximise the child or young person’s independence, opening the way in the future, to further study, employment and an independent life.’

At this stage in the commissioning cycle, Kent County Council is seeking engagement with organisations that can deliver Habilitation services. Workshops will initially support understanding market capability and capacity to deliver this service.

Typically, Habilitation service will offer:

• Deliver a comprehensive Habilitation Service to Children and young people with a vision impairment are supported to develop independent living skills so they are able to live independently once leaving school.

• Children and young people with a vision impairment are supported to access mainstream school. This can include taking undertaking environmental audits of the school environment and recommending adaptions to aid the child in independent navigating the school environment.

• Family awareness sessions.

• To maintain the Sight Impairment Register of Children and Young People.

• To complete the registration process (of the Sight Impairment Register) on receipt on Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI).

• To complete Specialist Assessments as part of the registration process including advice regarding relevant Benefits and Concessions.

• To respond to enquirers for Information, Advice and Guidance.

The service will be provided across Kent. The current service works with approximately 157 children/young people per year, either in the school setting or community.

Kent County Council is inviting organisations with an interest to attend Market engagement events. The dates for the workshops are below. Kent County Council reserve the right to amend this schedule depending on market interest.
