Description of the goods or services required
Ymddiriedolaeth Drws I’r Dyffryn - The Tywi Gateway Trust wishes to appoint a conservation architect with other specialist consultant support, in relation to work in Parc yr Esgob walled garden at Parc yr Esgob / Bishop’s Park, Old Bishop’s Palace, Abergwili, Carmarthenshire, SA31 2JG (NGR SN441209).
Dating from at least the late 18th century the walled garden is listed grade II and forms part of the former grounds of the old palace of the Bishop's of St Davids - Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Landscapes, Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales (PGW (Dy)59(CAM). Amongst the surviving historic features and structures within the walled garden, identified by an archaeological evaluation undertaken in March 2017, are the footings of three historic glasshouses, their associated heating systems and a dipping pond.
This project will restore and re-invigorate the walled garden, working with the local community to conserve and protect surviving historical features, and create a multi-functional space. It will enable a range of health and wellbeing, educational, training and community services to be delivered based around horticulture, food production, nature conservation, and events management. We will improve safe public access to all parts, restore the glasshouses to meet future needs, and enhance the robust functionality of different garden areas.
Informed by an updated Conservation Management Plan and feedback from community consultation, the architect will initially take the designs for the conservation and enhancement of Parc yr Esgob walled garden from RIBA stage 3 to RIBA stage 4, including securing planning consent, to inform the submission of the second phase of our NLHF funding application in August 2024.
Following the successful award of the second stage of funding from The NLHF the architect will then oversee and monitor the delivery of the main capital works taking the scheme through to RIBA stage 7 over a further 18 month period.
