Abstract
Overview of the Field Scale Trials, CYNNAL, Tir Canol project
The Field Scale Trials (FST) project has been exploring and trialling new approaches to local
food resilience in the Dyfi Biosphere. This builds on the idea that a more diverse crop production was prevalent in the area in the past, including potatoes grown in Penegoes in the 1940s, and flour made locally from locally grown wheat.
A landscape with a greater diversity of land use, particularly land use which works with nature, also has the benefits of providing greater ecological diversity and resilience. The Field Scale Trials project aims to support farmers to showcase diverse crop landscapes in action, inspiring other farmers to follow suit.
The supplier must co-ordinate 6-9 Field Scale Growers taking part per year working alongside farmers and growers to support them in trialling new crops or products in an agro-ecological way and with a greater diversity of land use providing greater ecological diversity and resilience. This would create a strong case for support that nature restoration can sit alongside, or indeed be embedded within, successful land-based businesses
