Abstract

The University of South Wales (USW) is a partner in a research and development project related to the production of low carbon end products from low value raw materials using a biorefinery approach. The project (Beacon, Project Ref. C80851) is funded by the Wales European Funding Office (WEFO) utilizing European Regional Development Funds (ERDF), and is led by Aberystwyth University. The University of South Wales wishes to procure an automated potentiometric pH titrator capable of supporting the titration modes as stated below, with an emphasis on the STAT mode for determining enzymatic activity (iv): i. DET (dynamic equivalence point titration) ii. MET (monotonic equivalence point titration) iii. SET (titration to one or two specified endpoints) iv. STAT (enzymatic and pH-STAT titrations) A specification for the required instrument is attached. The research does not require a high throughput of sample numbers. Responses are required from companies that can supply the full titration system including control and data processing software. Responses should include: • A detailed specification of the titration instrument • An indication of the track record of supplying quality laboratory instrumentation • An indication of the product support that is included or can be provided by the supplier / manufacturer, including instruction / training, possible future provision of spare parts and telephone support for maintenance and application problems. • Delivery time • A total cost for the supply of the instrument. Where options are available these MUST be clearly identified as optional items.

2.2

Description of the goods or services required

The University of South Wales (USW) is a partner in a research and development project related to the production of low carbon end products from low value raw materials using a biorefinery approach. The project (Beacon, Project Ref. C80851) is funded by the Wales European Funding Office (WEFO) utilizing European Regional Development Funds (ERDF), and is led by Aberystwyth University.

The University of South Wales wishes to procure an automated potentiometric pH titrator capable of supporting the titration modes as stated below, with an emphasis on the STAT mode for determining enzymatic activity (iv):

i. DET (dynamic equivalence point titration)

ii. MET (monotonic equivalence point titration)

iii. SET (titration to one or two specified endpoints)

iv. STAT (enzymatic and pH-STAT titrations)

A specification for the required instrument is attached. The research does not require a high throughput of sample numbers.

Responses are required from companies that can supply the full titration system including control and data processing software. Responses should include:

• A detailed specification of the titration instrument

• An indication of the track record of supplying quality laboratory instrumentation

• An indication of the product support that is included or can be provided by the supplier / manufacturer, including instruction / training, possible future provision of spare parts and telephone support for maintenance and application problems.

• Delivery time

• A total cost for the supply of the instrument. Where options are available these MUST be clearly identified as optional items.

Total quantity or scope of tender

Technical Requirements:

Fully automated, microprocessor controlled potentiometric titrator including peripheral units required to complete potentiometric titration.

All units should be easily connectable using standard connectors (e.g. USB), and be compatible and rapidly recognisable to each other without user input.

The ability to control the kinetics of chemical or enzymatic reactions by performing pH STAT experiments i.e. temperature, pH etc.

The ability to connect a minimum of two burettes, but with the facility to extend the number of burettes if required in the future.

The ability to extend the current apparatus with an auto sample processor for increased number of fully- automated analysis samples.

An accurate dosing unit/burette of ~ 20 mL.

Burettes should be capable of individual, simultaneous control and the ability to electronically store titrant information, and the ability to be exchanged without contamination.

A burette motor for bottle top burette.

A universal aqueous pH electrode for conducting pH STAT experiments.

Magnetic stirring mechanism.

pH and temperature recording, monitoring as well as adjusting features need to be included.

Real-time graph/ curve display.

Inclusive of software for full set up and control of the titration system, method selection, internal recording and storage of calibration data, set up data and results, and export of data to standard data formats (e.g. .csv/.pdf files). Compatibility with Windows should be clearly identified in the tender response.

If required, compatible system control hardware should be included within the response (e.g. dedicated PC or touchscreen-controlled unit).

An FDA compliance report should be provided.
